Explorador inglés. Pasó un tiempo como aventurero militar, luego se incorporó a un grupo inglés que se preparaba para establecer una colonia en América del Norte. Cuando la London Company recibió su escritura de constitución, el grupo zarpó y llegó a la bahía de Chesapeake (1607), donde estableció el primer asentamiento inglés en América del Norte, en Jamestown, del cual fue su líder. Mientras navegaba por el río para explorar la región circundante, los indios de la Confederación powhatan lo capturaron y Pocahontas le salvó la vida. En calidad de presidente de la colonia de Jamestown vigiló su desarrollo. Una lesión lo obligó a regresar a Inglaterra en 1609. Deseoso de seguir explorando, se comunicó con la compañía de Plymouth y zarpó en 1614 hacia la zona que denominó Nueva Inglaterra. Hizo un mapa de la costa y escribió descripciones de Virginia y Nueva Inglaterra que animaron a otros a colonizar.
